Fatima Fatima, located north of Lisbon, was once a small rural village in a rocky region mainly producing olive oil. It became famous in 1917 when three peasant children claimed the Virgin Mary appeared to them. It is now home to one of the most famous Marian Shrines in the world. Highlights of the region include the shrine, the Basilica of Fatima, Loca do Cabeco (the site of Our Lady´s 1st apparition) and Valinhos (the site of Our Lady´s 4th apparition) close to the town of Aljustrel.
