Lake Lucerne has mountains on all sides and forests coming down to the shores in many places. It is located near Lucerne city in central Switzerland. The lake is a complicated shape, with bends and arms reaching from the city into Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus. The Reuss River flows through Lucerne and into the lake. The famous Chaple Bridge is a long wooden bridge that crosses the river. The Water Tower, a defensive structure from the 13th century, can still be seen on the banks. The towers of the Renaissance style Church of St Leodegar overlooks the lake from a nearby hill.
