Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. It encompasses a natural harbour known as the Golden Horn and is the only metropolis that is situated on two continents. Its long history, from the Roman Empire through the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires to the modern day, is evident in the city’s architecture. Istanbul has also acquired a reputation for being a cultural and ethnic melting pot. As a result, there are many historical mosques, churches, synagogues, palaces, castles and towers to visit in the city. It will also be a joint European Capital of Culture in 2010. The old historic peninsula of Istanbul is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
