Mexico is situated in the south-western part of mainland North America. It is a very mountainous region: the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre Occidental ranges cross the country from north to south and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt cross it in the centre from east to west. The landscape can also boast vast deserts, beautiful beaches and a fascinating collection of flora and fauna. Mexican culture reflects the complexity of the country's history, from the Ancient Civilisations of the Maya and the Aztecs through the colonisation of the country by Spain. Its cuisine is also a combination of pre-Hispanic traditions and the culinary trends introduced by Spanish colonists. In Mexico you will find the ruins of ancient civilisations surrounded by bustling modern cities.
