In AD 79 the mighty Mt. Vesuvius erupted burying the Roman town of Pompeii under volcanic ash and pumice. Excavations provide astonishing insight into life at the height of the Roman Empire, as amazingly many buildings have remained intact. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Italy's leading attractions.
