Located in Northern Europe the Netherlands is bordered by the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south and Germany to the east. The country is often called Holland but this is formally incorrect as North and South Holland are two regions within the Netherlands. Most of the country is very flat with much land reclaimed from the sea. Netherlands is well known for its windmills, tulips and bicycles. Many well-known painters came from here, including Rembrandt van Rijn and Vincent van Gogh. In recent times attention has been drawn to the country for its more liberal and controversial social policies.
